Sense

Presence without cameras: CSI, mmWave, radio links

Why this band exists

Most rooms do not need a camera. They need to know whether someone is there. Sense uses the radio already in an ESP32: Wi-Fi channel state information shifts when a body moves through the room, and an mmWave module sees presence through a lampshade. rusty_esp_signal captures it on the chip and rusty_esp_sense reads it on the home computer.

Why now

The CSI reader scores 99.4 percent on recorded captures and the radar and CSI cells are built and host-tested. None of the presence cells has run on a board yet, so this band is the frontier: real code, honest status, hardware rows open.

How it fits

Connect ships the readings over ESP-NOW, LoRa, or the iroh mesh. Flash composes the sensing cell. Own keeps the readings attributable to a device you adopted. See and Hear stay off when Sense is enough.

Bricks in Sense

Each brick is a package in the Janus family under Remade-With-Rust. Read the field note, then snap it onto the rest of the house.

  • rusty_esp_signal · replaces ESP-CSI / vendor radio stacks

CSI, ESP-NOW, Wi-Fi lifecycle, BLE provisioning, LoRa, mmWave UART

  • rusty_esp_sense · replaces cloud CSI analytics

What to build first

  1. Lights that follow people through the house without a lens anywhere
  2. A presence log for a shed or a garage over LoRa
  3. Room occupancy on the home computer from two C6 boards
