See

Cameras and video that stay on your LAN

Why this band exists

A camera in the house is the most personal sensor you can own, and most of them send every frame to a company first. See keeps the picture on your network: rusty_esp_image captures from the sensor into borrowed frames, rusty_esp_video packs them as MJPEG over HTTP, RTP, or H.264 in MPEG-TS, and ffmpeg on any laptop plays the result.

Why now

OV2640 capture and MJPEG and RTP streaming have run on the XIAO ESP32-S3 Sense and the AI-Thinker ESP32-CAM, measured against ffmpeg as the oracle. On-chip H.264 is host-verified and waiting on its board numbers, and the P4 hardware codecs are planned. The honest version of a local camera is finally cheap.

How it fits

Flash builds the camera image. Connect carries the frames over the iroh mesh when the viewer is not on the same Wi-Fi. Own decides who may subscribe. Hear can ride the same board for a porch cam with audio.

Bricks in See

Each brick is a package in the Janus family under Remade-With-Rust. Read the field note, then snap it onto the rest of the house.

  • rusty_esp_video · replaces esp_video / CameraWebServer

    MJPEG over HTTP, RTP/JPEG, H.264 in MPEG-TS

  • rusty_esp_image · replaces esp32-camera glue

Capture seam, frame pools, JPEG probe, pixel kernels

What to build first

  1. A porch or doorbell camera whose page opens only inside your house
  2. A baby monitor that streams RTP to a laptop with ffplay
  3. A recorder on the home computer that saves MJPEG straight to disk
