Connect

iroh mesh, Wi-Fi, BLE, ESP-NOW, and LoRa between devices

Why this band exists

A smart home should not need a broker in another country to turn on a lamp. Connect puts an iroh endpoint on the ESP32 so devices dial each other by key: control over janus/rpc/1, frames over janus/media/1, and a bridge that fronts the small no_std boards that cannot speak QUIC themselves. rusty_esp_core is the shared vocabulary every device agrees on.

Why now

The mesh firmware has run on a XIAO ESP32-S3: 721 packets, none lost, and a 520 ms connect. No-PSRAM parts stay LAN-direct; PSRAM parts can use relays. Reach from outside the house over a relay has not been measured on a board yet.

How it fits

Every other band rides Connect. See and Hear stream over it, Sense reports over it, Own signs who may dial in, and Flash writes the endpoint secret into NVS so a device keeps its address across reflashes.

Bricks in Connect

Each brick is a package in the Janus family under Remade-With-Rust. Read the field note, then snap it onto the rest of the house.

  • rusty_esp_iroh · replaces cloud IoT brokers

iroh on ESP-IDF, Janus ALPNs, host client, bridge, OTA

  • rusty_esp_core · replaces ad hoc ESP type soups

Borrowed frames, PCM blocks, signed manifest, clock/rng/kv seams

What to build first

  1. A camera you watch from the laptop by device key, no port forwarding
  2. A bridge node that fronts a handful of battery sensors
  3. A home computer that subscribes to every device in the house
